Retreat Lifestyle and Essentials
Where is your center located?
Is there electricity at the center?
There is no electric energy at the center. We use candles for lighting to enhance the practice. If you need to charge any electronic devices, we recommend bringing a solar charger.
Is there internet or mobile signal access?
There is no internet or regular mobile signal at the center. This disconnection is a vital part of the healing and cleansing process, allowing you to focus on inner work.
In case of an emergency, the organizers will handle all necessary communication.
What meals are provided during the retreat?
The only meat served at our center will be fish. Tofu and other beans are provided as basic sources of protein. We can accommodate vegan diets—please let us know in advance if you have specific dietary requirements or allergies. In addition to these, we serve traditional native foods, such as Amazonian chicha, offering an authentic taste of the region.
For breakfast, we offer a variety of fruits, porridge, and other nutritious options. If you would like extra fruits, you can coordinate with the staff and other participants to purchase more.
What is the water source at the center?
We drink water directly from the rivers and springs around the houses. The water is perfectly clean and safe for consumption. However, if you prefer, you are welcome to bring products to sterilize and mineralize the water.
What are the bathroom facilities like?
We use ecological bathrooms to minimize our environmental impact. These are not traditional toilets but rather composting systems, aligning with our commitment to sustainability and respect for the land.
How do we bathe?
Everyone at the center bathes in the river, which is part of the overall experience of living harmoniously with nature. We encourage everyone to bring organic, ecological toiletries to protect the environment and maintain the purity of the water.
How do i wash my clothes?
We wash our clothes by hand in the river and encourage the use of ecological soaps. Please note that on rainy days, clothes may take a few days to dry, so it’s important to bring extra clothing to ensure you’re prepared.
If needed, laundry services can be arranged with the staff for a fee.
What is the weather like?
The weather is generally warm during the day and a bit cooler at night, though not excessively cold. The jungle climate is also quite humid, and frequent rains can be expected, so it’s important to bring waterproof clothing and prepare for the wet conditions.
What should I bring with me?
This are basic packaging recommendations, including gear, clothing, and essential items to bring.
As you might know, the rainforest is very rainy and humid, so we must have spare clothes so we have time to dry wet or washed clothes. The weather in this area can get warm during the day but cool over night.

What extra activities can I expect during the retreat?
Extra activities include teachings about Shuar spirituality and life in the rainforest, craft-making workshops of traditional Shuar musical instruments or pottery, storytelling by Shuar elders, ect.
These activities are designed to enrich your experience and deepen your connection to the spiritual traditions and way of life of the Amazonian peoples. However, our main priority is to conserve energy for the ceremonies, which take place three times a week. These activities are intended to be performed over a two-week period, but we cannot guarantee that any specific activity will be done during a particular week.
We evaluate the energy levels of participants throughout the retreat to decide whether to engage in certain activities or rest, ensuring everyone is in good shape for the next ceremony.
Health & Safety
Is travel and health insurance required to attend the retreat?
Yes, it is mandatory to bring travel and health insurance to attend the retreat, and you will need to present proof of these to the staff before the retreat begins.
Participants must ensure that their insurance is compatible with the regulations and requirements of Ecuador.
This ensures coverage for any issues that may arise due to personal health concerns, insect bites, or animal encounters, thereby prioritizing your safety and well-being during your time in the jungle.
Are vaccinations required to attend the retreat?
No vaccinations are required to enter Ecuador or to attend the retreat. Malaria and other diseases are very uncommon in the area, so no special precautions are necessary beyond what is typically recommended for the jungle environment.
Should I inform you if I’m taking medications?
Yes, the application process includes a comprehensive medical questionnaire that asks about any medications you are taking or taken within the last 6 months. We will review this information and let you know if your medications are compatible with Natem. Additionally, we will provide any necessary guidelines for these medications that you must agree to before we approve your registration.
This information, along with any food allergies or sensitivities, is crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants during the retreat. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us create a safe environment for everyone.
Should I inform the center of any present or previous health or mental issues?
Yes, participants must inform the center of any present or previous health or mental issues that may pose a risk to themselves or others. This is crucial to ensuring a safe environment for everyone during the retreat.
Are there mosquitos and other wildlife?
Yes, as we are in the heart of the jungle, there are mosquitos and various forms of wildlife. Toxic mosquito repellents are not allowed during the retreat. Instead, we use organic repellents to manage mosquitos effectively. We recommend bringing long sleeves and pants for additional protection.
Encounters with wildlife are a natural part of living in the rainforest, and while generally safe, it’s important to be mindful of your surroundings.
Is the retreat physically demanding?
The retreats do involve walking in the jungle and some physical exertion, such as bathing in the river. However, they are designed to be accessible for most people. If you have specific physical concerns, please contact us in advance.
Who will lead the ceremonies during the retreat?
All ceremonies will be led by Uwishin Arutam Ruymán, Shaman and spiritual leader of the Shuar people.
Why is following a specific diet and other cares important for the retreat, and how can I learn more about it?
To fully benefit from the retreat experience, it is essential to follow a rigorous diet that cleanses both the body and mind before the retreat. Additionally, participants are encouraged to take care of their sexual energy in order to maintain high levels of vitality throughout the process.
Ruymán has written three insightful articles to guide this steps:
My Grandparent’s Diet: A Clarification Statement
Second Part: The Diet in Shamanism, Specially Focused on Natem Ceremony
These articles not only provide a list of recommended foods but also help participants deeply understand the purpose and importance of the diet. The diet should be started at least two weeks prior to the start of the retreat.
What languages are spoken at the center?
The main staff speaks both Spanish and English fluently. Ceremonies are primarily conducted in Spanish, but English and Russian translators are available to ensure everyone understands and participates fully.

It is essential to honor the silence during ceremonies as well, being mindful of others’ personal space and adhering to the directions provided by the master and organizers at all times.
Are there any restrictions on smoking or taking other substances during the retreat?
During the retreat, it is not possible to smoke any kind of herb or consume any other altering substance. All plants and substances must be handled or allowed by the master or staff to ensure they align with the spiritual process.
What happens if a participant’s behavior is not aligned with the retreat’s guidelines?
The center reserves the right to determine if a participant should leave the retreat due to behavior or other circumstances. If it is decided that a participant cannot proceed, they will receive a refund for the remaining days that will not be attended.
Retreat Guidelines
What retreat options do you offer, and how are they scheduled?
We offer three retreat options: One & Two weeks retreats, and 21-day retreats for advanced students. All of these options are held within the same time frame, allowing participants to choose the length of their stay based on their experience and needs.
Why is a personal conversation required before attending the retreat?
We require a personal conversation with every participant who wishes to attend the retreat. This step allows us to get to know each other, understand the participant’s purpose for joining, and ensure that we create the best possible group with aligned intentions and positive energy. It also helps us confirm that everyone is coming with a genuine desire to learn and grow.
Additionally, this conversation allows us to clarify any questions or subjects regarding the retreat, ensuring everyone is well-prepared.
How do I secure a spot at the retreat, and what are the payment terms?
We offer spaces on a first come, first served basis. To secure your spot, we require a non-refundable 30% advanced payment at least 1 month before the retreat’s starting date. This allows us to confirm the transaction or resolve any possible inconveniences. The remaining 70% of the payment is due either upon your arrival at the retreat or via bank transfer 1 month prior.
Can I extend my stay at the retreat if I’m unsure how many weeks to book?
If you’re unsure how many weeks to attend, such as if you’re a beginner, you can book for one week and come prepared to extend for the following week. However, please note that we cannot guarantee room availability to extend your reservation.
Can I leave the retreat early if needed?
While we encourage participants to stay for the full duration to get the most out of the retreat, we understand that emergencies happen. If needed, you can leave early, though no refund will be provided, and transportation can be arranged at an additional cost.
What happens if I need to cancel my registration?
If you cancel your registration, you have several options. You can choose to transfer your full payment to another available retreat, ensuring you don’t lose your spot. Alternatively, you may receive a personal credit to be used within 1 year for a future retreat of your choice. A full refund will only be provided if we are able to fill your space in the retreat you are canceling from, ensuring that the retreat remains fully booked.
Do you offer work exchange or volunteer opportunities?
At the moment, we do not offer any work exchange or volunteer opportunities at the center. However, in exceptional situations, this may be offered to advanced students who have been practicing with us for a long time.
When can I book flights and make travel plans?
Do not book flights or make travel plans until your application has been reviewed and approved. Your registration is not confirmed until the center has approved your application and you have paid your deposit.
How do I get to the center from the airport?
We can organize transportation from the airport to our center with trusted drivers for an additional fee. Our transportation service is offered at a very competitive price to ensure a smooth journey into the jungle. You will also receive exact directions and other transportation options in a document we send to all participants.
Prior to the retreat, we will create a WhatsApp group for all participants, allowing you to coordinate and potentially share transportation costs when possible.
